Eleventh Dream Day's Rick Rizzo & Antietam's Tara Key talk instrumental shop:

Meeting in the Kentucky punk rock scene in the early-’80s, Eleventh Dream Day’s Rick Rizzo and Antietam’s Tara Key forged a friendship that led to a collaboration quite a bit softer than their respective indie rock outfits. We chatted about their recent effort, Double Star, and how the project travels long distances and time (fun fact: our interview mirrored the way they make music). You can listen to/read their story with new music selections here. It aired on WBEZ’s “Eight Forty-Eight” program this morning. They play Hideout in Chicago on Saturday; it’s also the record release show for Antietam’s Tenth Life.

If you haven’t heard Anni Rossi yet, check her out. She’s does a lot of interesting covers via her viola, like Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody,” which you can download here, Radiohead’s “Creep,” and Rihanna’s “Rude Boy.” However, it’s her own compositions that intrigue me the most. She has this quirky delivery, especially live. She gets a little more poppy on her sophomore effort, and she’s now playing her viola like a guitar. Check out selections from her new album, “Heavy Meadow,” as well as our interview about her process, which aired this morning on WBEZ’s “Eight Forty-Eight.”

Wherein I teleport to Chicago early-'90s and disappear...:

…not really, and I don’t solely interview bands from that era either, I promise. Although, it seems to be a thing lately.

Had a good chat with Urge Overkill’s Nash Kato and Eddie Roeser about their reunion and first album in 16 years (not-so-much-spoiler: drugs, egos separated them for some 7 years). Here’s the interview with new music clips; it aired on WBEZ/Chicago Public Radio yesterday morning. They play Bottom Lounge in Chicago on Friday.

Mother's Day mix

My mother suffered the perils of having a daughter that’s a freelance music critic/writer and music journalism adjunct prof when I asked her to cull a Top 10 list comprising her all-time favorite artists and why. Usually I’m making my parents mixes of music I like and think they’ll like and it’s typically new artists. For Mother’s Day this year I thought I’d turn the tables and surprise her with one comprising her preferences.

There’s nothing really shocking on her list as we spent many a road trip in a dilapidated station wagon listening to these artists when I was a kid and before I took over the family airwaves. I am surprised she didn’t add Neil Young/CSN&Y to the list, or Elvis, but he was more my dad’s thing (and dad’s a whole generation older than my mom). I love that she credited composer skills as a “why”. She gets high marks for her timeless taste, and extra credit for it not being too embarrassing to post…And now that she’s finally on the internet, if you come across this, mom, I hope you don’t mind me sharing.

She scores an A+ for being a cool enough mom to encourage the piecemeal “career” I’ve chosen, despite not always getting what I do and its sometimes rocky (no pun intended) outlook. Happy mother’s day, mom! The mix is on its way.

Rebecca P. Legaspi’s Top 10 favorite artists/musicians not necessarily in order:

1. The Beatles - John Lennon & Paul McCartney. Representative artists of my generation. Their music still makes sense today.

2. Simon & Garfunkel - created great music & lyrics together . Still like their music.

3. Don McClean - I just love almost all of his music & amazing lyric, especially “American Pie” & “Vincent”. He gets the core of America’s psyche.

4. Paul Anka - not only a singer, but also a composer - did it for Sinatra & others

5. Elton John - very creative, talented musician.

6. Johnny Cash - true to life lyric & catchy music.

7. Roy Orbison - down to earth & relatable words & music.

8. Louis Armstrong - his style of music goes from one generation to the next.

9. Barbra Streisand - super talented artist, great range of voice, can go from Ballads to Broadway.

10. Frank Sinatra - cool & suave; will always be “the Chairman of the Board “.

Last night was spent running back and forth between the Hawks game and a masterful performance by this man (accompanied by múm drummer/all-around great guy Samuli Kosminen) at Schubas.

I can’t really describe how amazing this show was. You really just need to see it for yourself. Click the play button, damnit.

Listening to a piece by Hauschka can be deceiving: What sounds like an ensemble of musicians and instruments is just one man, performing at one piano. His real name is Volker Bertelmann, and he hails from Dusseldorf, Germany, where he works with his “prepared piano.” He wrests disruptive sounds from the instrument’s 88 keys by outfitting the strings or mallets with objects such as ping-pong balls, aluminum foil and leather.
